Following on from our most recent blog post about how key transition periods in the lives of students (such as leaving home for the first time or moving to a new country) heightens their risk of suicide, we believe universities might find our PABBS suicide bereavement training course particularly relevant and useful, particularly because we know that students bereaved by suicide are significantly at risk of dying by suicide.
The Postvention Assisting those Bereaved By Suicide (PABBS) workshop is CPD-accredited, designed to increase the knowledge, skills and confidence of professionals who come into contact with or are responsible for the care of those bereaved or affected by suicide.
We have delivered PABBS suicide bereavement training to many universities. In fact, one university commissioned 11 workshops to PABBS train 220 employees, bringing different multidisciplinary student wellbeing teams, university security guards and student union leads together to align their skills and approaches to help provide better support to students bereaved by suicide.
We have considerable experience in training all these departments together at once, which is not a common occurrence – and the feedback we receive is exceptional.
The research-backed training workshop was developed by Dr Sharon McDonnell, founder and Managing Director of Suicide Bereavement UK, when she was employed by the University of Manchester.
The one-day face-to-face training workshop is delivered by two facilitators, both of whom have extensive knowledge and practical experience of working in this field. Training days take place throughout the year and can be booked directly via Suicide Bereavement UK. PABBS training is also delivered in-house for any organisations that want to train their staff.
As well as universities, other professions and establishments can benefit from attending PABBS training, including funeral directors, mental health professionals, GPs, prison staff, teachers, faith leaders, military personnel and housing association staff.
