suicide bereavement toolkits
NHS England commissioned Suicide Bereavement UK to develop an Armed Forces suicide bereavement pack. The pack consists of a series of ‘At Your Side’ suicide bereavement toolkits. The toolkits have been informed by serving personnel, reservists, ex-service personnel, and families who had lost someone to suicide, during or after service in the Armed Forces.
This involved taking part in a study, which informed the development of the toolkits. They shared their experiences, vulnerabilities and needs to help others bereaved by suicide in the Armed Forces community. They stated what should be included in each toolkit to help others.
We include some of their quotes in the toolkits. Others, in the Armed Forces community, bereaved by suicide, provided photographs of themselves and their families, to show their support for the toolkits and to reassure those bereaved by suicide that they are not alone.
The tri-force Armed Forces suicide bereavement pack currently consists of two ‘At Your Side’ toolkits. They describe the common grief responses when someone is bereaved by suicide; provide insights on what others found helpful and details of organisations that provide guidance and support. Each toolkit in the ‘At Your Side’ series has been written for different users, bereaved by suicide, in the Armed Forces community. They are free to download.
